Company Background & History
Union Springs Pharmaceuticals, LLC ("USP") is a focused sales and marketing organization created and run by proven entrepreneurs. The Company develops, commercializes, and brands unique, patent-protected healthcare products that are designed to maintain good health and help protect users from disease or disease transmission. Its primary business strategy is to offer high-quality, easily accessible non-prescription products that are supported by rigorous prescription-quality science and thought leader validation ("ethical OTC"). With this approach, USP addresses the significant, formative, and rapidly growing market segment that exists between prescription pharmaceuticals and ordinary over-the-counter products.
The emergence of this market segment, combined with USP's innovative product development and strong marketing, has positioned the Company to virtually "define" this largely unrecognized opportunity in the healthcare market. USP has termed this new healthcare category the Personal and Environmental Exposure Response market (PEER market). The Company's current and imminent products are precisely targeted to meet healthcare needs that are being marginalized by the current healthcare establishment.
Market Perspective ---Â PEER
Both professionals and consumers alike have come to believe they can prevent illness by keeping their hands free of germs and more recently, to fend off disease by boosting their immune systems at the first sign of a cold. These behaviors reflect a customer mentality that is increasingly oriented toward disease prevention and health system avoidance. These behaviors also reflect a belief that disease prevention is possible through personal attentiveness and preparedness. USP's market research and its rapid growth confirm that while this "preemptive" market is not well established, individuals are seeking new and improved means to avoid, or preempt, the risks of daily pathogenic exposures. Consumers and professionals understand that the best way to deal with illness is to avoid getting sick in the first place, but significantly, most are unprepared to respond to many everyday pathogenic exposures, though many feel motivated to do something more than simply wash their hands or take vitamins in an effort to protect themselves.
USP's PEER products are distinct from all current OTC products (the hand sanitizer, immune-boosting categories and products aimed at mitigating symptoms following the onset of sickness) in several important respects. PEER fills an entirely new usage occasion - "response to an exposure" - that logically falls between prophylaxis and immune system-boosting. PEER products tap the consumers' desire and educated need to protect themselves immediately when the threat of illness first arises. PEER products address not merely human-to-human transmission risks but also pathogenic threats from environmental sources. Some PEER products deliver residual prophylaxis in addition to offering response protection at the moment of exposure to a suspected pathogen.
Factors that will accelerate USP's success include:
- The continued rise in health care costs
- Increased emphasis on preventative wellness programs
- Increased social pressure among parents to provide safer, germ-free environments for their children
- Surging Medicare and Medicaid spending as "baby boomers" reach age 65
- Changes in non-prescription benefits for seniors
- The vast and growing number of uninsured and underinsured Americans who have no alternative to self-treatment
- Soaring costs of branded prescription pharmaceutical development, compared with relatively modest non-prescription product development costs
- Reduced access to professional care providers
- Patient desire for innovative, practical, more affordable, high-quality healthcare products
- Internet availability for non-prescription healthcare information and products
Company History
USP was founded by Roger Griggs in October of 2006. The original team which included Jacob Griggs, Kristi Griggs, and Roger began to license and develop a delivery platform product called DAPP (Disinfectant Applicator Pocket Pen). Its inventor, Gilbert Gonzales M.D. had patented the original technology which formed the cornerstone product for the "Clyns" brand. Later innovation and additional refinement led to the final version which became MyClyns. In January 2008, USP began implementing its PEER strategy with its revolutionary cornerstone product, MyClyns. MyClyns is the only product available with a broad spectrum of germ-killing action that can safely be sprayed, without toxicity or irritation, directly into the eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and open wounds after an exposure to potentially harmful pathogens. The company's first patent was quickly granted to Dr. Gonzalez, Joel Ivers, and Jake Griggs for MyClyns in July of 2008 and MyClyns recently received it's registered trademark in July, 2009. USP has identified, and is poised to launch, a number of other products that complement MyClyns.
Leveraging the success of MyClyns, USP has created the "Clyns" (pronounced C-L-E-N-S) brand to capitalize on the PEER market. USP's addition of the Safe Life T-5000 P95 respirator in January 2009, along with other "Clyns" products in negotiation or development, continues the development of the Company.
USP is one of the few companies with an active sales force focusing and calling directly on the EMS/fire, law enforcement, corrections, and military/government markets. Because of this operating position, and because of DECA's product development and commercialization success, USP has been approached by a number of companies that are interested in having USP promote their products or commercialize their technologies. Thus the Company continues to build an active pipeline of new products and technologies that are under evaluation and negotiation for licensing and inclusion with current sales efforts.
It should be noted that USP's sales force is supplemented by agreements with leading distributors in the first response markets, as well as domestic and foreign military and government markets. The Company is actively selling MyClyns and its other products throughout the world.
